      The homologation of methane with ethylene on supported transition metal catalysts was investigated by using the transient response reaction (TPR), temperature programmed pulse reaction (TPPR) and constant temperature pulse reaction (CTPR) of the probe molecule CH 3I. The different factors which greatly affect the reaction were also extensively studied. A tentative approach was adopted to split the overall reaction into two reaction steps occurring under moderate conditions. At first methane was decomposed to form surface carbonaceous species on the surface of the transition metals, then ethylene was introduced to homologate with surface carbonaceous species. In such a two step route the kinetic limitations can be overcome and the homologation of methane with ethylene may be practically achieved. Platinum and cobalt catalysts favor the homologation of methane with ethylene.
